Groovy Research

So, I've been spending some time doing research on the 1960s, because I eventually want to do a scrapbook album about that decade (still working on my 1970s album). I've gotten a ton of pictures off the web, and some of them are just awesome! Check out the fashion statements:

Not to mention all the nifty household items. I have no doubt that Xander would look at these and just go...huh? What's that? Poor kid doesn't know what he's missing!

One thing that boggles me is I keep seeing ads for video phones. Did anyone actually have these?

Even the food ads were totall hip!

I can't post any family photos, because I haven't gone through them all yet, but I can assure you that there were some hipsters on both sides of family back in the 60s. No hippies, though, much as my mother would've liked to have been one!
If you have any 60s anecdotes you'd like to share, please feel free!

He Knows What He Likes!

Xander is a very picky eater. There are countless food items he just refuses to eat, including almost all vegetables. Lately, though, he has been branching out a little bit. When we were at Crossgates Mall this past Friday, he enthusiastically agreed to share an order of sesame chicken with me. We had one fork to share, so of course he gave me all the tiny pieces and took the big ones for himself. :)

Then, after a brief nibble to taste the cheese wrap Joe got from Taco Bell, Xander decided that was his new favorite food and ate half of one.

This was all followed up with the old favorite, Orange Julius. Xander only likes the original orange flavor, though Joe and I have been branching out to try some new ones. Blackberry Blueberry? Awesome!

Xander's old standby, the PB&J, is still going strong. I've been trying to make him try more things, but usually he'll only do one tiny taste and then he gags. Maybe when he's older he'll do a complete turn around and eat everything. One can hope!

Joe's Birthday Weekend

Joe had a really great birthday weekend, and when Joe's happy so are the rest of us! LOL! Here's what we did:

Friday - I took the day off from work because Xander had a dental appointment (perfect teeth, by the way!). Joe drove us up to Albany afterwards in his continuing search for new motorcycle boots; he didn't find any. We hit the mall so I could indulge in more awesome sesame chicken, and pick up some scrapbook magazines from Borders. Joe got himself a little point and shoot digital camera to take with him on bike runs. And Xander begged big time to go to Toys R Us, where further begging ensued for some Star Wars action figures. Here's his begging face:

Saturday - Joe left bright and early for a ride with some of his club members out to an open house in Binghamton. I'll admit I was nervous about his firt long-distance ride, but not as worried as I'd have been if he was alone. For anyone who is interested, here's a picture of his bike:

While Joe was out riding, Xander and I did the grocery shopping and picked up a couple more birthday presents. At 4:30pm I dropped him off at Eli and Krissy's and headed back to Oneonta to meet Joe for dinner at Applebees. I even wore a dress! And, as Xander called it, some hideous lipstick. Such a way with words, that boy of mine! (Braden told me I looked beautiful, so there!) Joe and I had a great dinner together, and when we got home Xander gave him one of his presents earl - Season 1 of Doctor Who. Joe and I watched some after Xander went to bed.

Sunday - It was a Bruno pajama day. We slugged out in our jammies all day. Cinnamon buns for breakfast, followed later on by orange shakes (Xander's favorite) and the presentation to Joe of the rest of his gifts and his cards. Joe got a lot of birthday calls, and kept checking Facebook on his Blackberry to see who was leaving him birthday messages there. So cute! I made a stuffed, roast chicken for dinner, and for dessert we had a cheesecake sample to pick at.

Now...how do I top this next year? LOL!

Random Bruno Photos

Wednesday was a random photo day at the Big Blue Barn. I wanted Joe to take some pictures of me when I got home from work, cause I thought I looked pretty good, but this is the best one he got:

Since turnabout is fair play, I took a picture of him checking his Blackberry. He doesn't get service in the house, but in the driveway he does. He was checking to see if there were any messages from work.

Later in the evening I discovered I needed a photo of myself reading to use for a scrapbook page. I asked my helpful assistant, Xander, to take a couple of pictures of me. This came out the best:

Of course, he also felt the need to take about ten pictures of the SpongeBob episode he was watching, which he just thought was the coolest thing ever.

Just another typical Bruno day!

Apparently, He Had A VERY Good Day!

Joe very nicely made his point about the benefits of motorcycle riding yesterday. The weather was nice, so he took his bike out for a spin. At the end of my work day, he popped up in my office with this:

As if that wasn't nice enough (he almost never gives me flowers), the second part of my birthday present was also ready today and he presented me with that as well.

The ring was one my father had given to my mother way back in the way back (does this jog your memory now, Mom?) and I was tired of it languishing in my lock box. Joe had it resized for me to wear as a pinky ring.

So you can see how Joe's good day in turn gave me a good day!

Xander's Quote of the Week

Okay, so we've recently become fans of Boylan soda, which we pick up whenever we get takeout from our local Italian place. Joe is fond of the Black Cherry, while I switch back and forth between Creme and Creamy Birch Beer. Last week we got Xander his own bottle of orange soda. After he'd had about half of it, he came over to me in the kitchen.

Xander: Mommy, I have to tell you something.

Me: What?

Xander: I feel drunk!

Now, I have no idea why he associates the glass bottles with alcohol. The only person he's ever been around who drank a lot is my father-in-law, but he always had cans. Maybe it's because I was having a Birch Beer, so he thought it was all alcoholic. Either way, it was pretty funny. I reminded him that he was drinking soda, and that seemed to be the end of it.

It did remind me of Eli thinking he was drinking rum and Coke, and acting all drunk, when in reality he only had Coke. Goober.

Playing Chess

I could post some pictures and do a quick write-up of Joe teaching Xander to play chess yesterday (or, as Xander calls it, chest), but since I've already scrapped it I'll just post my page!

Run, Run, Runaway...

Have you ever had one of those days that just started out bad? I had one yesterday. A fight with Joe as soon as he got home from work left me very upset, so much so that when I got into town and would have made the turn to go into work, I just kept on driving until I got to Oneonta. Of course, I called in sick to work from the road so no one would worry. Ha!

My boss chose that morning of all mornings to call me at home because she needed something off my computer. That call tipped Joe off to the fact that I didn't go to work, and let my boss know that my own husband had no clue where I was. Joe called my brother Eli, thinking maybe I was there. Eli in turn called my sister-in-law, who then called me all worried. So much for sneaking away under the radar!

My spontaneous plan was to bum around Oneonta for a while (not easy, if you've ever been to Oneonta!) and then catch a movie at the mall. Turns out I'm not real good at wasting that kind of time. Three hours was just too much for me to fill, even after wandering aimlessly around Walmart and Borders. I ended up renting a chick flick from Blockbuster, picking up a salad from Vasta's, getting a bunch of books from the library, and just going home.

Joe and I eventually talked and made up. He's going to work on better communication with me, which was the root of yesterday's issue. And I got to have some me time, which I desperately needed. Next time, though, I'll let my husband know when I skip school!

It's A Leather Thing

The Brunos went to Albany on Saturday for a spot of shopping. Our first stop was Joe's favorite new store - Russ and Rebel Leather. He was looking at the motorcycle boots, since his are older than dirt and starting to disintegrate. Unfortunately, he didn't have much luck.

Xander, on the other hand, had fun playing hide-n-seek, trying on helmets, and charming the woman behind the counter out of some of her candy.

The store is two floors, full of leather boots, chaps, jackets, vests, shoes, wallets, gloves - you name it, they had it. I picked up a little travel-sized wallet for vacation this summer. I had Xander try on this vest...he liked looking like his dad, but we weren't ready to spend $60 on a mini vest.

It was a fun stop on our day, which also included a trip to Crossgates Mall, one of Xander's favorite places in the world. If you like leather, you'd love Russ and Rebel!

Something About A Hat...

My son is adorable. This is a fact I've known since he was born, and I dare you to dispute it! LOL! But for some reason, when he plunks a hat on his head it just increases his cuteness factor somehow. That's why I had to torment him with pictures yesterday morning on the way up to wait for the bus. You can't see his face because he was anxiously checking for worms.

I mean, how cute is he with his purple ball cap on?

Happy Birthday to Me!

I just don't understand people who don't like celebrating their birthdays. Speaking for myself, I love being the center of attention and getting showered with cards and gifts. :)

Yesterday was my 37th birthday. Xander sang to me, Joe sang to me, I got cards, I went to work and got more singing and more cards and presents! I had a ton of Facebook birthday wishes, my boss took me to lunch, and she even got my favorite kind of cake! (yellow with chocolate frosting, in case you're taking notes for next year)

Joe bought me dinner. My moms sang me my annual birthday song over the phone. The whole day was all about me, me, me! And my sister-in-law even made me a scrapbook page! Didn't this come out cute?

All in all, it was a great birthday. I'm a pretty lucky gal. Thanks, everyone, for making it such a special day!

Easter Weekend - A Review

Easter Weekend was full and busy. And the weather was just beautiful - 80s on Friday and Saturday, 70s on Easter. Here's what we did:

Thursday
Easter Egg coloring. This being Xander, we got the Monster Egg kit that came with stickers, monster hair and pipe cleaners. Xander has gotten much better at coloring eggs - he lets them sit in the water longer so the colors are better, instead of giving everything a cursory dip in his haste to get to the next egg. And Joe likes to do multi-colored eggs, so he was messing around with that.

Me, I did two. One yellow, one blue, and I left them in the coloring until they were nice and bright. No pastel eggs for me!

Saturday
We went up to Xander's school for some Easter activities. There wasn't a very big turn out, maybe ten kids, but Xander had fun. He got his face painted, played on the playground, colored an egg, and colored a picture.

The big highlight was the Easter egg hunt in the gym. He ran around like a crazy boy until he had a plastic bag full of eggs. Mostly hard candy and gum, though, not a lot of chocolate (the good stuff). We left after that, and he got to go home and play with the hose - one of his favorite things to do. After he went to bed I had to finish prepping for Easter morning.

Sunday
Easter morning. Xander got up at the ridiculous hour of 6am and by 7am he was going insane because he wanted to hunt for his eggs but had to wait for Joe to get home from work (which didn't happen until about quarter of nine). The Easter bunny left Xander a picture map of egg locations, and an empty basket to put the eggs in. The eggs were filled with chocolate (the good stuff!) and Legos. And the last thing to find was the Easter basket, which was full of dragon-related toys and a Scooby-Doo video.

My mother-in-law came up for dinner. Xander dragged her outside almost immediately, where he showed her how fast he can ride his bike, and how well he can cast his fishing pole. They also talked about what a grouchy father he has, LOL! (Quote of the Day: "You don't have to be mean to me just because Grandma's here.")

I made a big old spiral honey ham, mashed sweet potatoes, and broccoli. Theh ham came out totally awesome (good thing, since we'll be eating it all week) - Jean loved it so much she was gnawing the bone! Just kidding...that bone went home as an Easter present to her dog Smokey.

We finished up the day with some pictures, Xander feeling sick, and Joe scooting off to work. Now starts birthday week - gah!

Hanging With the Peeps

Easter is almost here, and nothing says Easter quite like a Peep. Check out some Peep art from around the interwebs:
